It is amazing how much the term mentoring has made its way into American vocabulary, talk shows, advice columns, cultural commentaries, and men’s work in general. There seems to be a broad recognition that the older generation is not passing on its presumed wisdom to the younger generation. We are more a “fatherless society” now, it seems to me, than when Alexander Mitscherlich first used the phrase to speak of the Germans after World War II. Could this mean that the elders do not have any wisdom to pass on?
